值得庆幸的是，《总有骄阳》并不乏忠实拥趸，这其中就包括制作人理查德·N·格莱德斯坦，他希望能将小说拍成电影。他说：“被书中人物所必须面对的抉择和人性深深吸引了，他们生活的世界、家庭概念、如何与家人相处、爱情与友情的责任和重要、种族问题以及堕胎都是令人着迷的话题，而狄更斯式的的叙事方式也让我倾心不已。虽说故事发生在3、40年代，可书中人物面临的种种困境在当今仍然普遍存在，所以对改编拍摄小说的想法执迷已久，哪怕电影只及小说的一半，那么其中的情感内涵也足以让观众受益匪浅。”格莱德斯坦前往佛蒙特州与欧文会面，一拍即合的二人立即着手物色导演，最终，他们锁定了曾执导过《狗脸的岁月》和《不一样的天空》的莱塞·霍尔斯道姆。非典型家庭、复杂、精彩而多变的初恋和性觉醒、忠诚与背叛和对古怪人物的细致描写都是霍尔斯道姆和欧文作品中的固有元素，此外，《狗脸的岁月》和小说《总有骄阳》都问世于1985年。霍尔斯道姆其实与本片渊源已久，欧文回忆说：“巧合的是，早在菲力浦·博萨斯在世时，莱塞·霍尔斯道姆就曾是眼中的最佳人选，菲力浦很喜欢《狗脸的岁月》，怎奈他当时片约缠身，只好作罢，多年后，当听说莱塞同意执导本片时，真的兴奋极了。”

欧文的剧本彻底改变了紧凑的小说，他去掉了过多的人物和次要情节，缩短了时间跨度，并加入了新内容。格莱德斯坦说：“约翰在创作初期就认为无法将小说中的整个故事呈现在大银幕上，在根据小说故事改编电影，而并非将小说拍成电影。这不是一部电视连续剧，如果有8小时，拍摄整部小说肯定不在话下，可这是一部电影，所以必须有所选择。”^[1]
