作弄别人，就会遭到别人的报复。这就是本片主人公刘易斯和他哥哥的命运。在科罗拉多州大学一年级读书的刘易斯买了辆旧车，打算前往新泽西，找女友维拉共渡周末。他还顺路把因酒后驾车而被盐湖城警局拘捕的哥哥富勒保释出来，并打算把他送到丹佛市。兄弟二人上路了，在路上，哥哥富勒经不住长路漫漫的寂寞买了一个汽车对讲机，打算同那些寂寞无聊、行驶在内华达公路上的司机们逗趣聊天，打发漫长枯寂的旅途时光。

不一会儿，他们收听到一个男子沉闷、沙哑的嗓音。哥哥富勒心生一计，让刘易斯假装女人同这名男子打情骂俏，开一通玩笑。一阵瞎扯之后，刘易斯就和那个男子约好到某旅馆17号房间见面。那名男子忙不迭赶到旅馆，找到17号房：迎接他的是一个满脸凶相的大胖子。此同时，躲在隔壁房间偷听的哥儿俩乐得忘乎所以，久久不能入睡。可是，兄弟俩万万没有想到的是，那名男子并不是好惹的主，他正在展开疯狂的报复行动……
