菲丽西提·霍夫曼1962年12月9日生于纽约，是家里八个孩子中最小的一个，有一位兄长和六位姐妹。高中就读于著名的密歇根Interlochen 艺术学院，从纽约大学艺术戏剧专业毕业后在伦敦的皇家戏剧学院继续进修了戏剧表演。
菲丽西提早年多在百老汇和非百老汇舞台打拼并小有成就，曾替代麦当娜出演著名百老汇舞台剧《Speed-the-Plow》。但闯荡好莱坞却并不非常成功，多数出演电视剧为主，大银幕上也只偶尔出演一些小配角，正如自己所言只一个自由演员经常会为下一个演出机会担心。1998年主演了著名制作人Aaron Sokin的首部电视剧《体育之夜》，可惜此剧“红颜薄命”，虽然评论家一致叫好但收视惨淡。此剧被砍后菲丽西提专注于和丈夫著名演员威廉H·梅西的感情生活，于2000年和2002年生下两个女儿。夫妻两人也多次在荧幕上合作。
